Minesweeper deal to be inked soon

India and South Korea are finalizing the deal for 12 minesweepers for the Indian Navy After repeated delays and protracted negotiations .In the next two months  Commercial negotiations will be finalized. The Indian Navy is also involved in the technical negotiation which have been completed before hand.

Vital Points:
§  The cost incurred for 12 minesweepers or Mine Counter Measure Vessels is worth about 32,640 crores. All the ships would be manufactured in India under Transfer of Technology.
§  The first ship will be delivered three years after the signing of contract .
§   Minesweepers are beneficial in the detection of  mines and explosives planted by the enemy targeting our ships as they enter or leave the harbors.

Facts to be known about Minesweepers:
§ §  Minesweeper ships use sonar systems to detect mines planted on the seabed or mines that float at predetermined depths.
§        §  Minesweepers are used to free the seas mines.
 § The Navy is presently having only four ageing minesweepers which will be retired by 2018 end. The efforts to obtain new MCMVs have been continuously delayed.
